Understanding Devaluation and the Service Worker's Role: A Social Role Valorization Approach Workshop
This workshop enables participants to explore and understand the wounding experiences many individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities live with as a result of being devalued by society. The training will demonstrate how Providers can improve the quality of individual service planning and implementation as well as improve the quality and depth of relationships with the individuals we serve. The workshop will provide participants an opportunity to deepen their own understanding of and identification with those they serve, as well as gain insights into their own role as a human service worker. In addition, the training will illustrate how Providers can help others in the community broaden their understanding and acceptance of individuals with intellectual/ developmental disabilities. Participants will reflect on some of the major issues facing people with impairments in today's culture and gain increased appreciation of the importance of valued social roles for living a typical life as a welcome member of society. This workshop will help Providers to acquire the skills and tools needed to address devaluation by helping individuals pursue and attain valued social roles in the communities in which they live. This workshop is based on the work of the late Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger of Syracuse University, developer of Social Role Valorization.
